what is a playa?
A playa lake is a small, shallow body of water that in many areas of the world would be more likely to be called a pond, or even a puddle rather than a lake. But, in the arid regions of the world where these lakes form water is a precious resource and definitions tend to be a bit more generous. more-»

Water is a scarce resource on the Great Plains so playas are a natural gathering place for all sorts of animals. Most of the Great Plains, including Lubbock, Texas, is also located on the Central Flyway, which is the main flight path for many migrating bird species.
