The grasses found in playa watersheds are often taller than in surrounding areas, and this is important for cover and forage for many birds.Unfortunately, playas in local parks and retention basins are usually mowed regularly reducing the area of grassy habitat.

Encouraging the growth of native plants in and around the playas is important not only to maintaining the overall ecological balance of a healthy playa, but also because the seeds of healthy native plants are a very important food source for the hundreds of bird species who live in these prairie wetlands.
